A newly-found pattern of social relationships among adults within one-male units of golden snub-nosed monkeys(Rhinopithecus roxenalla)in the Qinling Mountains,China

Group living provides various advantages to individuals in regards to protection avoidance,intergroup competition,productive success and social information.Stable one-male units(OMUs)consist of relationships between the adult females and the resident male as well as the relationships among adult females.Based on continuous observation of a reproductive group of golden snub-nosed monkeys(Rhinopithecus roxellana)in the Qinling Mountains,we analyzed the relationships among adult individual dyads within 4 OMUs.The results indicated that in golden snub-nosed monkey societies,females not only had no strong tendency to build a relationship with the resident male in the OMU but also had no strong tendency to build relationships with other females in the OMU.In comparison with hamadryas(Papio hamadryas)and gelada baboons(Theropithecus gelada),the relationships within golden snub-nosed monkeys OMUs showed neither the star-shaped pattern observed in hamadryas baboons nor the net-shaped pattern observed in gelada baboons.We concluded that the relationships within golden snub-nosed monkey OMUs indicated a third pattern in nonhuman primate societies.Future research is required to determine the potential mechanisms for such a pattern.

秦岭川金丝猴单元内成年雌性的等级关系与交配竞争被引量:3

在大部分非人灵长类物种中,不仅雄性的等级关系能够反映个体的资源竞争情况,而且雌性等级亦可以如此,且对社会群体的稳定发挥着更为重要的作用.本研究选取秦岭北坡中段陕西周至国家级自然保护区内玉皇庙村的1个人工投食川金丝猴群作为研究对象,2009年9月~2010年6月对成年雌性个体的取代行为和交配竞争现象进行了野外数据的收集.本研究初次选用取代行为标准对单元内的雌性等级进行判定.研究期间,收集到单元内雌性个体的取代行为共1223次,交配行为316次.结果表明,雌性个体间的竞争性取代行为的发生频率较低(平均发生频率为0.22次h1);目标单元内成年雌性等级的判定结果为:YL>DBC>YCM>XBC>BD(JB单元),XHW>JG>DT(JZT单元),QQ>TM>HF(PK单元),SK>TH>WM(LB单元);并证实在个体的社会性交往中,繁殖雄性更倾向于选取与高等级雌性进行交配;相对于单元内低等级雌性而言,高等级个体在交配竞争中更容易取胜(P<0.05).基于本研究结果,我们对成年雌性个体的社会关系有了更深一步的认识,并对单元内不同等级雌性的交配策略及方式做了初步了解.

Dominance rank of adult females and mating competition in Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys(Rhinopithecus roxellana)in the Qinling Mountains,China被引量:5

Dominance hierarchy reflects resource competition in male primates as well as females.In this study,we collected data on the social rank and mating competition of female Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys from September 2009 to June 2010 in the Qinling Mountains,Shaanxi,China.Displacement was used to determine social hierarchy of the studied wild females.A total of 1223 displacement bouts between adult females and 316 mating behaviors within one-male units(OMUs) were recorded.Competitive displacement among females was very low(0.22 displacements per observation hour).The dominant ranks of females in target OMUs were determined by displacement,from one OMU to another:JB unit:YL > DBC > YCM >XBC > BD;JZT unit:XHW > JG > DT;PK unit:QQ > TM > HF;LP unit:SK > TH > WM.Higher-ranking females performed significantly more sexual behavior than lower-ranking females in this rare monkey.High-ranking females were more likely to win mating contests within those OMUs.Based on these studies,we assessed the social relationships among adult females and clarified possible explanations for the strategies of female mating competition in the OMUs.Furthermore,the notion that reproductive success may also be related to female dominance hierarchies in this polygynous species should be considered in future research.
