The verb complement phrase has been the focus of discussion among Chinese grammarians because of its complexity. In the teaching of Chinese as a second language, the complement system has been a great difficulty, as it comprises as many as 8 kinds of complement with very complicated usage. Just as Prof. Peter Kupfer has put it that this system "is not scientific nor is it applicable in teaching", as so it is not accepted by overseas teachers of Chinese. To facilitate the teaching, based on what has achieved in the study of Chinese complements, the author of this paper proposes to simplify the complement system.
